Dave Tout
In order to engage most students in maths and numeracy the maths taught needs to move beyond the textbook, worksheets and chalk and talk to offer an alternative approach and a chance for ALL students to succeed and enjoy maths. In this hands-on workshop participants will experience a range of games and activities suitable for classroom use. The activities focus on the development of core maths skills through approaches such as co-operative group work that also encourage the development of mathematical language, the use of real-life and hands-on materials, as well as on enjoyment and having fun with maths. Suitable for anyone teaching literacy and numeracy.
Dave is one of the most experienced adult numeracy educators in Australia. He is particularly interested in making mathematics relevant, interesting and fun for all students especially those students who are disengaged from mathematics. Dave has written a wide range of teaching, curriculum, assessment and professional development materials and resources, and has presented on a wide range of topics at numerous local, regional, national and international conferences and events including in Sweden, Japan, Spain, the Netherlands, the US, Canada and the UK. He is particularly renowned for his hands-on workshops, which not only make maths fun, but also provide teachers with practical examples of how a range of maths and numeracy topics can be made relevant and practical.
