Sponsorship and display options

Now in its forty-second year, the Australian Council for Adult Literacy (ACAL) will host its 2020 Annual National Conference in Canberra, on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September 2020.

As the national peak body, ACAL promotes adult literacy and numeracy policy and practice, advocating on behalf of equitable adult literacy and numeracy provision.  ACAL provides leadership in areas of research and debate, offering professional development opportunities to practitioners working in the field in the form of national conferences, forums, webinars and newsletters.  The national conference provides a forum for language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) educators, providers, resource developers and stakeholder organisations to debate issues in adult literacy and numeracy policy and practice in Australia.

ACAL 2020, A Vision Beyond: Multiliteracies for critical times, aims to attract diversity, in the form of high-quality presentations, workshops and papers from both practitioners and researchers, to address its scope and concerns.  With its focus on contemporary issues facing the field, the Conference program will respond to topics which continue to pose challenges for teaching and learning.

The intent of Conference is to build on and continue the work of the 2019 Conference, in addressing policy deficits and shaping a national approach to adult literacy and numeracy.  It is also concerned to share and discuss good practice in the field.  To these ends, ACAL 2020 has three streams:

  • Adult Language and Literacy (including Financial Literacy)
  • Adult Numeracy
  • Adult Language, Literacy and Numeracy Policy

In this prospectus you will find more information about how you can contribute to the success of this year’s event.

Adult literacy is a significant issue in Australia with approximately 7.3 million (44.4%) of Australians aged 15 to 74 years having literacy skills that make everyday tasks difficult (ABS, 2013).  Further to this, an additional 1 in 3 Australians (30%) have limited literacy skills that make them vulnerable to unemployment and social exclusion.  Furthermore, approximately 53% of working age people have difficulty with numeracy.  Building the skills required for a contemporary knowledge and digitally-based society is of critical concern for individuals, employers, industry, policy makers, health providers and educational institutions.

ACAL offers sponsors an opportunity to partner with ACAL to promote their services and provide support for adult literacy and numeracy in Australia.  Your message will reach managers, practitioners and support staff across a range of sectors, including workplace literacy settings, libraries, the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, community-based learning centres, adult education providers and organisations working with youth.

The Conference

The Conference will be held during Adult Learners Week 2020, offering two-days of exploration and connecting the voices of keynote speakers, researchers and practitioners to discuss change and shifts in national funding priorities.  In addition, time and space has been included for practical workshops, thereby providing an opportunity for presenters to bring successful literacy and numeracy practices from their own context to a broader audience.

Venue

The National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, ACT.

Who will attend?

Each year the ACAL Conference is held in a different state or territory, with numbers ranging between 150 – 250 delegates, including teachers, vocational trainers, curriculum designers, program managers, volunteer tutors, librarians, academics, researchers, and postgraduate students.  The Conference provides an opportunity for practitioners from around Australia to discuss important issues pertaining to the adult literacy and numeracy field, as well as share experiences and build new networks.
